Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine research published between 2020 and 2025 to understand the impact of social media use on adolescents’ mental health. The PRISMA methodology was applied to guide the selection and refinement of the information. The findings revealed a significant relationship between excessive engagement with social media platforms and the presence of symptoms such as distress, low self-esteem, insomnia, sadness, and emotional dependence. Social comparison, the constant search for online validation, and emotional isolation were identified as key factors contributing to the development of negative emotional states. Nevertheless, the literature also indicates that social media can generate positive effects on adolescents’ socialization and overall well-being when used creatively and with purpose.
