Abstract
The most important aspect of seismic retrofitting using high-strength steel prestressing bars (PC bars) is to use active as well as passive confinements and transverse reinforcement. It should be noted that active confinement enhances the compressive strength and ductility of confined concrete. The aim of this study was to investigate the shear strength and the shear resistance mechanism of RC columns retrofitted by this technique. Thirty-six specimens with either bonded or unbonded rebars were used to experimentally evaluate the truss and arch mechanisms. The shear strength of retrofitted RC columns was also analytically assessed using the Arakawa and Minami equations.
