Abstract
Nanometer-scale magnetite particles were prepared in a dispersing system with a dispersant at a very low concentration. The mean sizes of the particles prepared under optimum conditions were determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to be approximately 3.8nm. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction pattern showed that the particles' phase was consistent with magnetite. The magnetic characteristics were studied using a vibration sample magnetometer (VSM). The dried samples exhibited approximately superparamagnetic behavior. © 2006 The Japan Institute of Metals.
