Abstract

[...]the dynamic moments, the moments most pregnant with meaning, happen just before something takes place or just after it has happened. [...]if you look at the body language of our protagonist, she goes from fetal position to crawling to standing to bending and finally returning to fetal position. In Goethe's analysis, this present ( Gegenwart) emerges because the sculpture is centered on the exact instant in which the snake's fangs penetrate the soft flesh above and to one side of the buttocks (a ticklish spot).
