Female Military Veterans with Disabilities

Abstract

Despite a growing recognition of the significance of women’s roles in the military, the professional literature has given only scant attention to the unique needs of female military veterans with disabilities. Based on data and research derived from the US, Europe and Israel, Dekel and Goldberg offer a much needed review on this topic. Grounded on the social model of disability, this chapter draws attention to the unique mental and physical disabilities women face in the military and their consequences on various aspects of their lives such as family lives and help seeking. They conclude that female military veterans with disabilities face ‘double jeopardy’, as the negative effects of their disability are accompanied by the negative effect of being a woman.
