The equilibrium distribution coefficient of Ni increases and that of V decreases with increasing carbon content and distributions of C in Fe-C-Ni and Fe-C-V alloys differ little from those in Fe-C binary alloys. This effect of carbon is thermodynamically explained using the interaction parameter and the activity coefficient. The effect of various alloying elements on the equilibrium distributions of nitrogen and hydrogen are discussed thermodynamically.
