Abstract

The electrochemical properties of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) and 2,5,8,11,14,17-hexafluoro-hexa- peri-hexabenzocoronene (6F-HBC), are examined in nonaqueous lithium cell. The discharge capacity for HBC and 6F-HBC at the first cycle are ∼460 and 1230 mAh g-1, respectively, which are larger than the theoretical capacity based on the LiC6 limit. Although the large irreversible capacity are observed at the first cycle, ∼170 (350) mAh g -1 of charge capacity are obtained for HBC (6F-HBC). The present study demonstrates that PAHs are attractive not only for electronic and optoelectronic devices, but also for a negative electrode material of lithium-ion batteries. © 2011 The Electrochemical Society.
