Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood. Type 1 diabetes accounts for most of the cases, affecting one in 300 children and adolescents; however, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing, especially among overweight and obese children and adolescents, and those in high-risk ethnic groups. Recent advances in diabetes management led to the development of the 2003 Canadian Diabetes Association clinical practice guidelines which address clinically important questions related to the prevention, detection and management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their complications. These guidelines are evidenced-based and were developed following a systematic collection and appraisal of the available evidence with recommendations graded according to the level and applicability of the evidence. In the present issue, the guidelines that are specific and/or relevant to children and adolescents with diabetes are presented. Supporting evidence is discussed and recommendations presented for the management of children and adolescents with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. © 2005 Pulsus Group Inc. All rights reserved.
