Abstract
In waste management systems based on IoT technologies, sensors embedded in waste collection trucks, waste containers, and recycling bins allow for the remote and real-time monitoring of container and bin fill levels, temperature, odor, emergency conditions, and location. Thanks to the instantaneous data transmitted from these containers and recycling bins to the waste management center, collection vehicle routes can be optimized, emergency situations can be addressed promptly, and the carbon footprint can be reduced, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability. Furthermore, IoT-based smart robotic technologies placed in waste collection trucks enable the separation of recyclable materials before reaching the disposal station. When integrated with other urban services managed through smart systems, smart waste management becomes more systematic, improvable, and of higher quality. There are several smart cities with successful implementations of smart waste management. This chapter examines smart waste management technologies and highlights effective smart city applications in this area.
