Abstract

Markets represent a new vision for meeting urban needs. Traditional markets emerged from the fundamental necessities of local communities and continue to play a vital role in supporting the economic, social, and cultural life of urban residents, including those in Semarang. Johar Market, one of the city’s largest and most historic markets, remains active today and has undergone revitalization following the 2015 fire. This research examines how far sustainability principles have been implemented in South Johar Market, particularly regarding healthy market standards outlined in the Minister of Health Regulation No. 17 of 2020. The regulation highlights the need for markets that are clean, safe, and comfortable, supported by proper sanitation, adequate clean water, and complete supporting facilities. Healthy markets are not a temporary concept but an essential component of public building design.Using a descriptive qualitative method—through field observations, document analysis, and interviews with managers and traders—this study gathered factual on-site data. The results show that South Johar Market’s physical facilities already meet most health indicators, including natural ventilation, organized kiosk zoning, restrooms, natural lighting, and clear signage, though weaknesses remain in daily cleanliness and vector control.Overall, the market fulfills key sustainable traditional market criteria, and its physical renewal aligns with improved environmental health quality.
