Abstract
Mediterranean piracy developed legal traditions, cultural norms, and even a set of professional courtesies that set it apart from maritime thievery elsewhere. The very qualities that made the sea a natural entrepôt also made it the perfect incubator for piracy: abundance of harbors and islands, ease of transport, and a sprawl of coastal cultures long-accustomed to accommodating different ethnicities, legal practices, and religions.
