Abstract

This article describes the German debate concerning the "rehabilitation of practical philosophy," locates its origin in neo-Aristotelian thought, and formulates three neo-Aristotelian theses derived from the Aristotelian understanding of praxis. Neo-Aristotelianism is shown to be a response to the standard modern "scientific" understanding of practical knowledge, which paradoxically entailed a regression in the understanding of practical knowledge (and of the relation between theory and praxis), and which led to fundamental problems in the development of modern sciences of action.
