The Algerian war of independence challenged the traditional image of the soldier-fighter. The forms of combat, the sorts of activities that French soldiers were asked to carry out, as well the enemies they pursued all failed to conform to the image soldiers had of military service. As a result, the war generated other models of masculinity that played themselves out between between men or in their relationship to women.
