Abstract

Coconut seedlings were raised in poly-bags in two contrasting soils and common salt wasapplied at the rate of 0, 2 , 4 , 6, 8, 10 and 12 g per seedling. The study was carried out fromJune 1982 to July 1983 and December 1982 to November 1983.The seedlings were quite tolerant of salination. Dry matter accumulated in plant partswere in the order, leaves >roots >stem. Uptake of applied nutrients was very high comparedwith control treatments in both experiments; it was higher for Na than for CI. Uptake ofnutrients was higher in the maritime than in the forest soil, showing evidence of ecologicaladaptation of the seedlings to the maritime environment in which they are traditionally grownin Nigeria.
