Abstract

Mu'tazilah is a theological school with the characteristic of using the dominant ratio in understanding religious texts. Islamic history records that the Mu'tazilah was set as the official state ideology in the Abbasid dynasty. Therefore the Mu'tazilah have an important role in the development of Kalam in the world of Islamic thought. Among the important ideas of the Mu'tazilah in the aspect of faith or aqidah is the issue of seeing Allah SWT. It is known that this issue has developed since the early days of the Mu'tazilah and Ahmad bin Hanbal. This issue then caused a long debate among scholars of kalam from various sects, the main question that was raised was: "Can believers see Allah SWT?". The scholars of kalam cannot be separated from the use of reasoned arguments in building their arguments. Among the well-known of the Mu'tazilah sect was Al-Qadhi Abdul Jabbar and he said that it is impossible for Allah to be seen in this world and in the hereafter. This opinion then spread widely in society at that time. The view of the Mu'tazilah who denies that Allah can be seen, then received a serious response from Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. He built his critique through an approach to the science of kalam based on the Naqly arguments from the Qur'an and Sunnah as well as the arguments of good reason. As a result, Ibn Taimiyyah asserts that Allah SWT can be seen in the hereafter. This article aims to find out the nature of the problem: "Can a believer see Allah SWT?" by explaining the method used by Ibn Taimiyyah and Al-Qadhi Abdul Jabbar in building an argument for aqidah or the science of kalam. And by examining Ibn Taimiyyah's criticism of the thoughts of Al-Qadhi Abdul Jabbar in the issue of seeing Allah SWT. The study and analysis in this article is a literature review that refers to primary references from both Al-Qadhi Abdul Jabbar and Ibn Taimiyyah as well as other authoritative literature.
