Abstract

This study aims to develop bearings with ultrahigh precision, infinite static stiffness, high vibration damping capability and new functions in terms of axis positioning and dynamic stiffness control. To this end an active air journal bearing is proposed, comprising noncontact sensors to detect the radial position of its axis, noncontact actuators to support and drive the axis, and a controller to regulate the whole system.
