Abstract

There are family groups created on Facebook that are benefitted by the secondary and third cycle family members who live in different cities to be in contact. Family engagement research has focused primarily on parentinitiated behavior and on measuring tasks that parents perform either at the program setting or with their children in the home. Although Turkish family structures change constantly, such media tools are used to protect these relationships. This article’s main purpose is to understand whether the family communication effect occurs between the popular topics and social media engagement as represented by the number of likesand likability of characters featured in the post on families' Facebook pages. In this study, two computer-based content analyses were applied to data obtained from Facebook. Five hundred (N=500) archive posts from 2012 to 2016 were collected from 37 different Facebook pages. Adjusted R Squared (R2), eta-squared (η2) value was used to analyze the effect size among groups. Further, general linear model was used to examine the relation between popular topics and social media engagement. The results showed that there is a significant positive link between the contents of family pages on Facebook and the participants' social media engagement levels. (English) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
