Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of an Arduino and Infrared (IR) sensor-based automatic door opening system aimed at enhancing convenience, hygiene, and accessibility in both residential and commercial environments. The system utilizes an IR sensor to detect the presence of an individual near the door and automatically triggers a motorized mechanism via an Arduino Uno microcontroller to open or close the door without physical contact. The proposed design is low-cost, energy-efficient, and easy to implement using readily available components such as the L298N motor driver and a DC or servo motor. The system architecture is modular, allowing for scalability and integration with other smart technologies. The paper outlines the detailed system design, working principle, component selection, and applications across various sectors including healthcare, offices, and smart homes. Advantages such as touchless operation, low power consumption, and improved accessibility are highlighted, along with limitations like environmental sensitivity and security concerns. This project contributes to the growing demand for automated and contactless systems, especially in the context of public health and smart infrastructure development. Future enhancements may include integration with IoT platforms, biometric authentication, and advanced obstacle detection to improve reliability and functionality.
