Abstract

Il reprend aussi, point par point, la façon dont Röntgen caractérise ces nouveaux rayons, à commencer par l’appellation de « rayons X » qu’il leur donne.Röntgen’s text (1895) on the discovery of X-rays is interesting both in terms of its content – the nature of the phenomenon he discovered – and the manner in which the text is presented, that is to say the quality of the scientific characterisation that underpins the discovery. This analysis by J. J. Samueli – whom we would like to thank for making the original German article of 1895 available on BibNum (and translating it from German himself!) – explains how a Crookes tube, the device in which X-rays were discovered, works. It also provides an up-to-date explanation of how X-rays are generated, in particular through “braking radiation”. The author also provides a step-by-step guide to how Röntgen characterises these new rays, starting with why he calls them “X-rays”.
