Abstract

Ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast has been recognized as a disease that can be identified radiographically not only by means of structural changes of the parenchyma but specially when microcalcifications are found. On the other hand, several histologic types have prompted a classification with implications in the treatment of the disease. This review has the purpose to bring out the historical background, the frequency, clinical findings an the explorations needed. At the same time reviews the basis for the pathological diagnosis, with emphasis in the identification of the diverse histological types. Those lesions that should be included in the differential diagnosis are also commented upon. Classification of Van Nuys is followed as the basis for the different forms of treatment.
