Abstract

In this article, the terms software and software engineer have been defined, an overview of the process followed by software engineers has been provided, and three examples of embedded software development of increasing complexity have been discussed. The phases of the software development process have been highlighted. Special considerations required due to the nature of the system being developed were given for the examples used. It is hoped that this provides some insight into what a software engineer does. The training of a software engineer was not discussed here, but is provided later in this issue.
