Abstract
Ion shadowing and blocking measurements show that the solid-liquid transition at the (110) surface of lead starts at approximately 40 K below the bulk melting point of lead Tm. The thickness of the liquid surface film increases dramatically as the temperature approaches Tm. © 1985 The American Physical Society.
