Abstract

The school space is an essential element in the teaching-learning process in early childhood. The aim of this study, which is part of a broader investigation funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (CAS17/00125), is to analyze the pedagogical possibilities and use of space in a nursery school, obtaining a greater understanding of the conceptualization, spatial configuration and functionality carried out by the teaching team from the perspective of learning environments. A case study is carried out in a nursery school in Huelva (Spain). The data collection techniques used are qualitative: semi-structured interview, observation and documentary analysis. The results show a traditional conception and use of space based on an adult-centered pedagogy. The use of space as a container for teaching activity stands out, detecting a hierarchy of the scenarios led by the space-classroom. As conclusions, the need to rethink the space from the perspective of the learning environment is highlighted, to accentuate the educational nature and the importance that all school spaces have when it comes to generating educational opportunities for children.
