Abstract

This chapter focuses on mesenteric arterial pathology, its diagnosis and management. We begin with a brief discussion of the relevant normal anatomy of the celiac artery, SMA (superior mesenteric artery), and the IMA (inferior mesenteric artery). We discuss what is normal anatomy as well as important collateral circulation. The diagnosis and management of the mesenteric disease are then presented with focus on the characteristic features of both acute thromboembolic disease and chronic atherosclerotic disease. A brief overview of the relevant clinical features and management of mesenteric venous disease is discussed as well. Next, we review pertinent findings, diagnosis, and management of mesenteric arterial dissection (SMA) and mesenteric aneurysmal disease. Finally, we cover the relevant anatomy, features, diagnosis, and management of structural/anatomic mesenteric disease with a discussion on median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) and middle aortic syndrome.
