Mediationism Has No Place in Psychology: Reply to Salthouse

Abstract

Responds to the comments by T. A. Salthouse (see record 1997-06394-001) on the article by M. J. Watkins (see record 1990-16345-001) regarding mediationism and the obfuscation of memory. Salthouse's commentary is grounded in the premise that the overriding theme of Watkins's article is the proliferation of memory theories, and this may be slightly misleading. The author argues that by focusing on the proliferation of memory theories, Salthouse missed the author's basic argument, that mediationism obfuscates the true nature of memory and has no place in psychology.
