Abstract

Current understanding of ice-related underwater acoustic phenomena, characteristic of both arctic and subarctic environments, are briefly reviewed. The phenomenology of ambient noise generation and propagation in subarctic waters, being unique to the marginal sea/ice zone, are discussed in some detail. Recent investigations suggest that ocean wave-generated noise at the Arctic ocean-open ocean boundary can, under the proper circumstances, have very long range effects. Suggestions for future hydroacoustic research in subarctic waters are outlined. Refs.
