Abstract
This essay discusses the judicialization of urban environmental conflicts in Latin America. It provides an overview of recent sociolegal research on this social phenomenon. It also discusses the key concepts that have been commonly employed in this debate and suggests a tentative typology that refers to the roles judges actually play as social actors in conflicts of this kind.
