His book and 3 others were the best-known English texts on diseases of the eye of the 1830s and 1840s. The 3 others were William Mackenzie's Practical Treatise on Diseases of the Eye, Richard Middlemore's Treatise on the Diseases of the Eye and Its Appendages, and Thomas Wharton Jones' Manual of the Principles and Practice of Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery.
