Abstract
Waste management plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable campus practices, particularly in universities with large populations and diverse activities. This study examines stakeholder involvement in the waste management systems of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Using a qualitative case study approach, which involves in-depth interviews and documentation, the research explores how both institutions integrate sustainability into their campus operations. UMY's Green Campus program emphasizes environmental care and the creation of a comfortable, eco-friendly learning environment. Its design promotes ecological balance through green open spaces, energy-efficient buildings, and comprehensive waste management systems. Community participation, conservation activities, and awareness campaigns further strengthen UMY's commitment to sustainability. Meanwhile, USM focuses on sustainable mobility and inclusive infrastructure. The university offers eco-friendly transportation options, including bicycle paths, pedestrian walkways, shuttle buses, and bicycle-sharing systems like Beam scooters and e-bikes. These initiatives aim to minimize vehicle use, thereby reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, USM ensures accessibility for individuals with disabilities, reinforcing its holistic approach to sustainable campus development. Together, UMY and USM demonstrate how active stakeholder engagement and integrated environmental strategies can create truly sustainable academic environments.
