Experiência de pesquisa em uma região periférica: a Amazônia

Abstract

Este artigo é um depoimento a respeito de uma pesquisa em história social, mais tarde transformada em livro, realizada na década de 1980, na Amazônia. O objeto de estudo era o ciclo da borracha, com ênfase nas relações de produção estabelecidas entre seringueiros, aviadores e 'barões da borracha'. A metodologia empregada utilizou como fonte principal diversos arquivos, entre eles revistas, jornais e outras publicações da época, assim como a análise de documentos depositados em cartórios de Belém. O projeto inseria-se no quadro teórico da discussão sobre a validade explicativa da teoria da dependência. O artigo aponta para algumas limitações da abordagem então adotada, sem contudo desdenhar o significado que o estudo assumiu no levantamento de questões relativas à resistência dos seringueiros com relação à exploração de seu trabalho e à existência de correntes de opinião contraditórias entre a própria elite da borracha.This article, which has been turned into a book, is the narration of a social history research work taken place in the Amazon region in the 1980's. The research studied the rubber cycle, emphasizing the relations among rubber workers, airplane pilots and the so-called 'rubber barons'. The main sources of information used in the study come from magazines, newspapers and other publications from that period of time, as well as documents from Belém City Hall archives. The project was part of a theoretical discussion on the explanatory validity of the theory of dependence. The article focus on the limitations of the approach used at the time, but it does not disregard the important contribution of the research, which brought up new issues on the rubber workers' resistance against the exploitation of their labor force, as well as on the existence of contradictory views among the members of the rubber elite themselves.
