Abstract

The operation of meaning behind Rosalía's music video Malamente. Cap. 1. Augurio (Canada, 2018) essentially depends on the process of re-signification to which some of the most iconic symbols of Spanish culture are subjected. To overcome the temporal limitation inherent to this format, which obstructs its narrative vocation, the video takes as its point of departure a series of symbolic elements that the viewer knows beforehand. Imagery associated with the world of bullfighting, Holy Week and flamenco is thus used to tell a story of gender violence and female emancipation.
