Abstract
This article addresses the participation of the Afrodescendant population in the processes of construction and expansion of citizenship in the State of Cauca between 1853 and 1863. The central argument suggests that Afrocauanos, while excluded from formal citizenship, participated in citizenship processes through claims and citizen demands of a conventional and non-conventional type. This population used its social capital to come out of the shadows and venture into public affairs and to dispute and configure different paths for citizenship.
