Utilization of nuclear fusion - fusion power reactor

Abstract

The paper reviews the development of nuclear fusion from the present status to future power reactors. The emphasis is placed on the possibility of realizing commercial power reactors or other possible applications. The paper deals with the following items: basic concept and main features of electric power generation by nuclear fusion; development plans from experimental reactors to future commercial ones; outlook for commercializing fusion power reactors with emphasis on economical aspects like cost of electricity; technical problems of fusion reactors, such as first wall material, tritium, super-conducting magnet and blanket technology; and electric and non-electric applications of nuclear fusion, including fusion-fission hybrid reactors.
