Abstract

The occurrence of rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure associated with viral infections is uncommon. We report a case of a 17-year-old female suffering from rhabdomyolysis caused by echovirus 9 in which the patient recovered after being treated for acute renal failure with hemodialysis. Among 42 cases of virus-induced rhabdomyolysis review in Japanese and English literatures, influenza virus is the most common cause of rhabdomyolysis, coxsackie virus tends to be next most common cause. Renal failure was recognized in 31 of the cases. © 1989, The Japanese Society of Internal Medicine. All rights reserved.
