Clinical and demographic characteristics of hospitalized stroke patients

Abstract

© 2015, Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo. All rights reserved. Objective. To characterize a sample of patients with a diagnosis of stroke, hospitalized in a university hospital and check the clinical variables associated. Method. Observational retrospective study with data collection held in the sector of medical records from the hospital, from a structured questionnaire by the researchers. We collected data of gender, age, race, and length of stay of patients as well the clinical variables. Descriptive statistics for sample characterization were per- formed. Results. The sample consisted of 187 adults, where 54.6 were women, and the majority of the white race. The average age was 71.8 years and the average of hospitalization time was 24.3 days. There was association between the number of episodes and the type of stroke and mortality with type of stroke. Conclusions. The patients present the first episode of ischemic stroke with right hemisphere involvement and, as outcome, most went to the intensive care unit or evolves to death. All presented several pathologies and made use of more than six medicines. Received motor and respiratory physiotherapy twice a day with different intervention techniques and had more of a sequel.
