Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between Emotional Intelligence (EI), physical self-concept, healthy habits such as Physical Activity (PA) and Mediterranean Diet (DM) and academic performance in a sample of 1650 students belonging to the province of Granada. The design was descriptive-exploratory, cross-sectional and ex post facto, carrying out a structural equation model (SEM). For the measurement of the variables, the Physical Self-Concept Questionnaire (CAF) was used, the PAQ-A scale to assess PA practice; the KIDMED test to measure the quality of the diet, and a self-made questionnaire (Ad hoc) for school performance. The results showed that there is a relationship between all the dimensions of EI -with greater strength in emotional regulation and understanding-, and the general self-concept. Furthermore, those subjects who better understand their emotions follow healthier habits, and there is a positive relationship between diet and PA. Lastly, academic performance was higher when general self-concept improved, there was a better diet and PA was performed. In this way, the key role of psychosocial factors in psychological well-being and in improving academic performance is emphasized.
