Abstract
Diet and caloric content of roadkill birds in the central region of Paraná State, Brazil. We obtained data on diet and calorimetry of 70 specimens of birds accidentally killed on roads in the central region of Paraná State, Brazil, with the objective of assessing the impact of the road network on the trophic ecology of birds. From the analyzed samples, 31% of the species were omnivores, 30% insectivores, 16% carnivores, 14% frugivores and 9% insetivore/frugivores. A variation in the diet was observed, especially for carnivores and omnivores. The most frequent food items were Coleoptera (20%), seeds (17%) and Hymenoptera (15%). The highest volumetric item was Rodentia (35%). Frugivores and insectivores had the highest caloric means. The presence of items from different origins refl ects the lack of a preferred diet as well as the persistent impact of the highways on these birds. Key
