Abstract
Recent developments in the area of nuclear level densities are reviewed. The current research programs in heavy ionphysics and nuclear astrophysics require more information about level densities at high energy and for nuclei which are off of the stability line. Some research in both theory and experiment promises to improve our understanding of level densities in both of these areas. Despite this progress, unanswered questions remain about level densities even for lower energies andfor nuclei on the stability line. © 2014 Atomic Energy Society of Japan.
