Abstract

Research has been conducted to determine the concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments of the Martapura River in South Kalimantan. This research is important to do, considering that the Martapura River is a source of clean water from the Bandarmasih PDAM (Banjarmasin Regional Water Company), while currently it has been polluted. In this paper, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) measurement was conducted on heavy metal element (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Hg) of surface sediment samples systematically collected from nine stations along the Martapura River from the Bincau Muara area, Banjar District to the Basirih area, the Banjarmasin City. The results of analysis showed that the highest concentrations of Fe (48,00068,800 ppm), Mn (4942,142 ppm), Zn (79161 ppm), Cu (4082 ppm) and Hg (0.0925.775 ppm). The surface sediments were unpolluted by Cu and Zn.
