Abstract

Development of telecommunications technology is also accompanied by the transmission technique that can carry large bandwidth, such as SONET / SDH which has bit rate up to 40 Gb /s. Fiber optics is the most appropriate medium used for the transmission, which for long distance communication single mode step index type is the most appropriate. Developed multiplexing WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) enables SONET, ATM and other channels may be propagating in a single optical fiber. Bandwidth grows makes WDM evolved into DWDM.. A variety of the input make devices selected to be diverse, which in turn can be enter into DWDM with 10 Gbps capacity. Capacity of DWDM must be selected, for example by using 4 wavelength values according to the grid ITU-T 1568.77nm, 1569.59nm, 1571.23 nm and 1572.05 nm. The result can minimize the effects of FWM where the harmonics produced are not included in the fundamental wavelength. Use of EDFA in optical fiber transmission in DWDM shut is considering OSNR. OSNR calculation depends on the number of the wavelength, bit rate, dispersion in the fiber and the number of amplifier used. In general, the more amplifier is used the OSNR will be smaller. Large bandwidth also decreases OSNR. So the smaller OSNR indicate noise more dominant compare to signal.
