Abstract

The aim of this article is to briefly describe the history of the first edition of Machado de Assis's Paginas recolhidas, as well as suggest hypotheses about its publishing process to discuss the editorial role ofDom Casmurro's author. To this end, the writer's performance in the editorial production process of his own titles is recovered through bibliographical elements and, especially, the information available in his correspondence to then address the process of the making of the book in question, Machado's first miscelannea-here understood as a variety of genres. The title was published in 1899 and it was made up of eight short stories, six chronicles, one play, one speech, one evocation and one correspondence analysis.
