Interdisciplinary Approach

Abstract

Treatment of metastatic breast cancer, an unfortunately still mostly fatal disease, is increasingly becoming an interdisciplinary challenge. Longer courses of disease due to more carefully scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic measures cause longer therapy durations. Novel therapeutic and trial options lead to longer progression-free and overall survival. Good tolerability and sufficient side effect management as well as consideration of family life and social and financial circumstances are prerequisites for maintaining a good quality of life. An interdisciplinary network of all therapy partners is essential for an optimal individualized therapy concept in metastatic breast cancer. For the first time, international guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of metastatic breast cancer were published at the Advanced Breast Cancer Consensus, ABC1 (Lisbon 2011) and subsequently revised at ABC2 (2013) and ABC3 (2015). In Germany, recommendations for metastatic breast cancer can be found in the evidence-based annually updated AGO guidelines.
