Abstract

This paper addresses the modelling, measurement and prediction of the emergence of system behaviours arising from individual agent properties in cooperative multi-agent systems. It is shown that by mixing different spatial and velocity coherence terms in the Lagrangian model describing the behaviour of individual agents it is possible to produce a wide range of behaviours of the whole system of agents. These emergent behaviours include a range of motions from crystal and near-rigid body to quasi-periodic and swarming. A number of examples of these behaviours are presented. When the above approach to modelling behaviour is combined with a measure of emergence it is possible to predict the onset of these behaviours and to control the transitions between them. This work has the potential to be the basis for the control of systems of cooperating autonomous agents
