Abstract
- marks of profession: cohesion, commitment to norms of service, terminal career, homogenous membership, internal control of violations, etc. - for him the two key factors are professional knowledge - abstract, codified as principles, applicable to concrete issues, believed to solve problems (whether or not it actually does), internally created and transmitted, mysterious to the uninitiated service ideal - individual client needs above all else, the professional decides what the client needs (not the client imposing demands) autonomy = "having one's behavior judged by colleague peers, not outsiders" (p. 291)
