Senior Scientist - Translational Respiratory Science

Location: Cambridge; Permanent

Salary: Competitive

If you're inspired by the possibilities of science to change lives and you thrive when making brave decisions - join us.

MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca. Here, you'll have the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives every day. As one of the world's premier biotechnology companies, our mission is centred on delivering life-changing products that advance world health and help fight and cure disease.

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist specialising in Translational Respiratory Science with a broad understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. With a passion for innovative scientific research leading to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics, with a particular emphasis on translational approaches to biologics development.

As a member of the Respiratory, Autoimmunity and Inflammation (RIA) research group in Cambridge UK, you will work as part of a team discovering and developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of inflammatory diseases with a focus on respiratory diseases. MedImmune has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We attract top minds, and we nurture and build top talent.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To be successful in this role you will have a firm understanding of the mechanistic basis of human disease and will play a key role in designing and ensuring successful execution of studies to translate preclinical insights into early clinical development of novel biologics. In order to do this effectively, you will use your good understanding of the drug development process, from lead identification through clinical trials. You will be a great communicator and leader, as well as having the ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders in Clinical Development, other relevant functions within MedImmune, and externally.

You will demonstrate strong scientific and strategic leadership qualities and be able to work within a fast-paced pre-clinical department to translate fundamental insights into the molecular heterogeneity of Respiratory diseases into targeted therapeutic and biomarker hypotheses that can be tested in clinical trials. As part of this, you will drive the publication of your findings. In addition, you will have responsibility for mentoring junior scientists and will have a clear ability to inspire, develop and collaborate well with colleagues, academic and industry partners.

Essential Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Biochemistry or a closely related field.
  • Extensive research experience in respiratory disease and/or epithelial biology with a background in human translational approaches to understand basic biological mechanisms and/or patient heterogeneity in disease.
  • Experience of discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies and other biologics as well as late-stage drug development coupled with a knowledge of clinical pharmacology, biostatistics, and clinical trial design.
  • Scientific creativity and ability to drive own research ideas to a successful conclusion, demonstrated by strong publication record or project progression.
  • Expertise in appropriate in vitro and in vivo models to establish a relationship between dose, schedule, PK, and pharmacodynamics (e.g., mechanism of action, potential biomarkers).
  • Experience of working within human tissue act guidelines.

Desirable Requirements

  • Familiarity with regulatory documentation for CTA/IND submission.
  • Experience of Product Development Teams and clinical development to progress and support clinical molecules.
  • Basic bioinformatics skills.
