Position Summary

Alexion is seeking a talented leader to lead critical R&D governance processes, drive operational excellence in managing the pipeline portfolio, and lead, development and grow the R&D project management capability. The role requires a deep understanding of project planning for programs at all stages of the pipeline, core business processes that intersect with the R&D portfolio, and best practices in the stewardship of a biotech portfolio. The Senior Director of Portfolio and Project Management will support Alexion's ability to maximize the R&D strategy by ensuring continuous alignment of business goals and priorities with operational delivery through project teams. The successful candidate will drive functional line excellence across R&D portfolio management, project management and planning and serve as functional leader of Project Managers and Project Planners (outside of the ALXN1210 program). Member of the Strategy, Portfolio, and Project Management Leadership Team.

Principal Responsibilities

+ Drives and supports cross-functional strategies, initiatives, and activities to improve productivity and capability of the R&D organization.

+ Ensure clear and effective processes for portfolio management and project delivery including:

+ Annual Business Plan

+ Portfolio goal setting, prioritization, and metrics development

+ Portfolio reporting and timely communications of portfolio progress to RDLT, Board of Directors, APH Board

+ R&D governance

+ Decision escalation process, stage gate definitions and deliverables

+ Project Management and Planning for internal and BD/alliance projects

+ Issue communication and management

+ Track and analyze external examples of excellence in portfolio / program management

+ Ensures effective R&D governance practices and process

+ Ensure skilled, productive, and compliant R&D program management organization, including expert project management and planning.

+ Ensure appropriate standards, processes, tools, and working practices that enable efficient and effective delivery of R&D projects across the pipeline including integrated development plans, TPPs, milestones/timelines, decision criteria, risk assessment and management, budget and resource management.

+ Develop and optimize enterprise processes and systems to support project delivery and portfolio performance, e.g., Enterprise Project Planning and Reporting System.

+ Enhance resource modeling and planning methods, allocation and management.

+ Cultivate productive and collaborative relationships within R&D and across functional areas including Global Operations, Commercial, Business Development, IP, and Finance.

+ Interface with senior and executive management to report progress, achievements, significant issues and risks.

+ Serves as functional line leader of Project Managers and Project Planners outside of the ALXN1210 program. Actively supports, coaches, and develops team members.

+ Manages resource forecast, scenario planning and overall workforce plan of the team. Experience in resource management including contractor and vendor services.

+ Lead resourcing strategies to enable delivery of functional responsibilities.

+ Coach and develop colleagues in best practice and help develop skills and expertise in portfolio and project management

+ Manage internal and external resources, including off-shore teams in solution delivery

+ Communicates effectively with internal team members, external experts and regulatory authorities.

+ Demonstrated ability to provide coaching and feedback to foster professional development while also supporting business goals.

Qualifications

+ At least 15 years' of experience in managing multiple, highly complex projects and portfolio governance.

+ Deep expertise in biopharmaceutical R&D portfolio management, project management, and drug development.

+ Knowledge of technical and commercial issues that drive drug development.

+ Strong communication skills with an ability to simplify and translate complicated data and messages for leadership.

+ Demonstrated success in negotiating and fostering collaborative solutions

+ Strong track record as a leader and line manager who achieves team and organizational goals

+ Significant experience in implementing portfolio management practices and process improvements

+ Strong contributor to strategic planning with leadership teams and track record of implementation success.

Education

+ Masters degree in business, engineering, or scientific discipline
