Duties

Unpacking the Past is a FREE program that connects middle school classrooms in Philadelphia public and Title I charter schools with the world-renowned collections and teaching resources of the Penn Museum. The four stages of the program include (1) faculty in-service days for the teachers at the Museum; (2) an in-school visit from Penn Museum educators with a workshop introducing both concepts and objects that will then be familiar reference points when the students come to the Museum; (3) a class visit to the Penn Museum with a gallery tour and workshop; and (4) post-visit student projects highlighting the sum of their learning, developed collaboratively between Museum Educators and class teachers to reflect what specific schools and teachers think best serves the needs of their students. The program focuses on either ancient Egypt or ancient Rome. Reporting to the Unpacking the Past GRoW Annenberg Program Manager, the Museum Educator is responsible for learning and teaching a variety of workshops and gallery tours, both in the Penn Museum and in the community. The Museum Educator will be required to learn a significant amount of information about ancient Egyptian and ancient Roman civilizations and will need the ability to teach the content in an engaging and spirited manner. The Museum Educator will follow a scripted curriculum and must be willing to receive constructive criticism and make adjustments according to specific feedback. The Museum Educator must have excellent classroom management technique and be comfortable in an urban middle school setting. Commitment and passion for delivering a high quality, core content, standards-based program, along with a sense of fun and adventure are essential. This is a grant funded one-year position, with funding currently in place through June 30, 2019. The Museum is actively fundraising to provide support for the position beyond that date, so renewal is subject to funding.DUTIES: (Description should be brief and only include principle duties.)* Teach outreach lessons about the Penn Museum and archaeology to middle school students in Philadelphia public and charter schools* Lead tours of the Egypt and Rome galleries at the Penn Museum* Teach various workshops in the Museum, including Mummy Makers and Digging Up Rome* Develop Common Core-aligned extension lessons to help teachers connect their Unpacking the Past experience to their classroom practice* Communicate with school administration and arrange for Unpacking the Past staff to participate in Family Nights and Report Card DaysReporting to the Unpacking the Past GRoW Annenberg Program Manager, the Part-time Museum Educator is responsible for learning and teaching a variety of workshops and gallery tours, both in the Penn Museum and in the community. The Part-time Museum Educator will follow a scripted curriculum and must be willing to receive constructive criticism and make adjustments according to specific feedback. The Part-time Museum Educator must have excellent classroom management technique and be comfortable in an urban middle school setting. The Part-time Unpacking the Past Educator will also be responsible for preparing for and attending various community events to provide activities and programs for a general audience. Commitment and passion for delivering a high quality, core content, standards-based program, along with a sense of fun and adventure are essential. This is a grant funded position, with funding currently in place through June 30, 2019. The Museum is actively fundraising to provide support for the position beyond that date, so renewal is subject to funding.

Qualifications

Associates Degree or two year college required, Bachelor's Degree preferred in education, history, anthropology or related field preferred. Two years of experience teaching in urban schools preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Flexible personality, creative teaching style, excellent written and verbal communication skills and proven Common Core-aligned lesson-planning experience. Attention to detail and good organization/time management skills a must. Driver's License and comfortability driving on urban roads required. This is a part time position, 20 hours per week.* Attention to detail and good organization/time management skillsSome weekend and evening work may be required. Criminal background, Child Abuse Clearance and FBI fingerprinting required.
