The Corcoran Department of History and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation seek a historian and teacher of national prominence in the study of the life, ideas, and influence of Thomas Jefferson and of his social and cultural context, including transatlantic connections. The scholar will join the Department of History, at the rank of associate professor (tenured). The successful candidate will hold the Brockman Foundation Jefferson Scholars Foundation Professorship, a five-year renewable chair. The anticipated start date for the appointment is August 25, 2019.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in History or a terminal degree in a related field and must demonstrate an outstanding publication and teaching record in the area of Early American History (broadly construed). We prefer a candidate who has drawn on archives and scholarship relevant to understanding Jefferson and his social, political, and cultural connections.

We anticipate the imminent creation of a Jefferson Scholars Center for the Age of Jefferson, which will host dissertation workshops and public lectures and provide financial support for graduate students and a post-doc. The successful candidate will assume the directorship of this center within a year of joining the faculty.

In addition, the faculty member hired into this position will:

* forge interdisciplinary and collaborative relationships with faculty across Arts & Sciences.

* provide leadership in A&S; teaching and scholarship at a time when we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the university.

* train graduate students.

* become an active member of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation community.

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation (www.jeffersonscholars.org) attracts to the University the most promising leaders, scholars, and citizens in the world and provides them with sufficient financial support to develop their talents for the good of the University community and beyond. Faculty joining the University by way of the Foundation's Chaired Professorships also serve the University's mission to provide the best learning experience for undergraduates. They will join a community of engaging undergraduate and graduate students and distinguished professors.
