Summary
VA Wilkes Barre is recruiting for a Physician position for its Surgical Service Line. The Physician will function at VA Wilkes Barre Surgical Services.
This position requires successfully completion of general Surgery residency training. Must be general surgery board eligible.
Responsibilities
The Physician will function in a multi-disciplinary team approach and provide patient care to our nation's Veterans within the agency's General Surgery Services. This position requires specialized knowledge and skills relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management in the following areas: alimentary tract; abdomen and its contents; breasts, skin and soft tissue; head and neck (including trauma, vascular, endocrine, congenital and oncologic disorders - particularly tumors of the skin, salivary glands, thyroid, parathyroid, and the oral cavity); vascular system (excluding the intracranial vessels, the heart, and those vessels intrinsic and immediately adjacent thereto); endocrine system; surgical oncology (including coordinated multimodality management of the cancer patient by screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy, rehabilitation, and follow-up); management of trauma, including musculoskeletal, hand and head injuries.
The responsibility for all phases of care of the injured patient is an essential component of general surgery; as well as complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions in emergency departments and intensive care units. Work Schedule: M-F, 8:00am - 4:30pm. On-call time is required. Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): The incumbent for this position may be eligible to apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program, up to $200,000, depending on the amount of verified qualifying debt balance and funding availability. Eligibility to apply does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Approval for EDRP awards are subject to the availability of funding and other qualifying factors. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Your resume must reflect successful completion of general surgery residency training and must be general surgery board eligible. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Fellowship training in Bariatric/colorectal/surgical oncology/vascular surgery/Trauma critical care/Urology administrative experience and board certification. 5 years of formal general surgery training. Preferred preference will be provided to personnel that have completed fellowship training. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
